Average Life

The average length of time to principal repayment on a bond and is expressed in years. Primarily used in the analysis of bonds with staggered principal payments such as mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities, and sinking fund bonds, to estimate yield-to-maturity. It can also refer to the dollar-weighted average maturity of a portfolio of bonds.
